THE DANTE ALIGHIERI OPENS AN OFFICE IN RAMALLAH

The Palestine Committee of the “Dante Alighieri” Society was officially inaugurated in Ramallah under the auspices of the Italian Consulate General in Jerusalem. The inauguration ceremony was held as part of the events organised by the Italian Consulate for the 18thWeek of the Italian Language in the World. The ceremony was attended by the Consul General in Jerusalem, Fabio Sokolowicz, and by the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Sabri Saidam, in addition to several intellectuals and members of the Palestinian world of culture, including writer Souad Amiry, who has published numerous books in Italy, and numerous members of the Italian community. The inauguration was hosted in the Melchite Church in Ramallah, which is bringing forward a project to constitute an Italian library.

Congratulating the Consulate General for the Week of the Italian Language in the World initiative, Minister Sabri Saidam – who was given the new Committee’s membership card N. 1 (shown by the minister in the photo) – spoke of the numerous activities in which his Ministry engages with the Consulate General, also in meeting the large demand for Italian language and culture among all levels of Palestinian students, which is one of the main drivers of the collaboration between Italy and Palestine in the sectors of education and research. For example, together with three more Palestinian ministries, the UNESCO office and the Conservatory of Ramallah, the Ministry sponsors the Palestinian edition of ‘2018. Italia. Culture. Mediterraneo.’.

On his part, the Consul General thanked the minister for his support for the initiatives to promote and disseminate the Italian language, especially among youths, and assured his determination to collaborate with the new “Dante Alighieri” Committee.

The new Committee will thus contribute to the teamwork to conduct Italy’s integrated promotion strategy in Palestine. The ceremony closed with the signing of the Dante Alighieri Membership Convention – to be sent to Italy for the finalisation of the procedure – by Paola Tartaglia, the president-designate of the new Committee.
