Service abroad of judicial and extrajudicial documents

(Reference Office: D.G.IT. – Unit for the Protection of Italians Abroad and for International Judicial Cooperation)

Service is a fundamental phase of civil, criminal, tax, administrative, bankruptcy and labour proceedings, as well as of some pre-trial or administrative phases, which brings to notice and provides legal knowledge of a measure or decision through the delivery of a judicial or extrajudicial document by a specific notifying party, according to precise procedures.

Pursuant to Article 37 of Legislative Decree No. 71/2011, the consular office serves the documents referred to it, in accordance with the provisions on EU judicial cooperation, the relevant international conventions and the laws of the State of residence.

The guide (vademecum) intends to provide foreign Diplomatic-Consular Representations accredited to the Presidency of the Republic with an essential consultation tool designed to facilitate procedures for the service of judicial documents to (natural and legal) persons domiciled or resident in Italy.
