EU Statement on North Korea

Brussels, 12 December 2012 – A 571/12

Statement by EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, concerning the DPRK’s “satellite” launch

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

“The launch from DPRK earlier today is another step in a long-running attempt by the DPRK to acquire ballistic missile technology and is thus a clear violation of the DPRK’s international obligations, in particular under UN Security Council Resolutions 1718 and 1874.

I urge the DPRK to comply, without delay, fully and unconditionally with its obligations under relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, its IAEA comprehensive Safeguards Agreement under the IPT, and its commitments towards denuclearisation under the 2005 Joint Statement of the Six Party Talks.

The EU will consider an appropriate response, in close consultation with key partners, and in line with USC deliberations, including possible additional restrictive measures.”
