Algeria has adopted new regulations on the import and sale of all categories of motor vehicles. The new rules are designed to rationalise the car dealership market and increase road safety. In effect, however, they act as an instrument to reduce vehicle imports.
To import and sell vehicles, it will be necessary to apply to the Ministry of Industry for authorisation, which is granted only if certain requirements are met. The new law also envisages that the new rules will apply with immediate effect for imports of any new vehicles, with the exception of those for which a letter of credit had already been issued on the date of publication in the official journal. This last factor was the reason for the block of vehicle imports since early April.
