| Competences | The Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy is responsible for the following tasks: a) It manages the institutional communications of the Minister and the Ministry, promoting and disseminating their activities and initiatives to the national and international public, in collaboration with the Ministry’s central offices and foreign offices; b) It collects, selects, processes, and disseminates the most relevant national and international news and information to the Ministry’s central offices, foreign offices, and other public administrations; c) It provides foreign offices and other public administrations, in consultation with the relevant Ministry’s central offices, with information and support materials for promoting Italy’s unique and evolving identity and characteristics abroad, analyzing developments and trends in the country’s international perception; d) It maintains relations with the Italian and international press, which reports on the Minister and Ministry’s activities; it follows matters relating to the accreditation and professional activity of foreign journalists in Italy; e) coordinates relations between the Ministry’s central offices and foreign offices with the public; f) conducts research and studies on international relations and public diplomacy, in collaboration with other directorates-general, relevant public administrations, academia, and civil society; develops analyses and proposals for strategic foreign policy lines; g) promotes public debate, training, and research on international relations and public diplomacy; h) promotes Italy’s presence in international organizations; i) maintains the historical archive and library, promoting their updating and enhancement; l) handles cultural issues in relations with international bodies and organizations, without prejudice to the Ministry of Culture’s protection powers in the recovery of cultural assets belonging to the national cultural heritage that have been illegally exported abroad; m) promotes, within the scope of the responsibilities of the Directorate General for the Promotion of the Country System, the dissemination of the Italian language and culture abroad, including through the management of the network of Italian cultural institutes and the Italian education system worldwide, including liaison with the institutions managing Italian language and culture courses; n) manages the Ministry’s activities related to scholarships and school and academic exchange programs. |
