ENI has further consolidated its position in Mozambique with the discovery, announced today 17 March 2012, of a new natural gas deposit. The find was made at the Mamba North East 1 well, the third drilled by ENI in Area 4 of the Rovuma River basin (in the north of the country), about 50 km offshore from Cabo Delgado.
The new reserves amount to around 283 billion cubic metres of gas, which increase the potential of Area 4 as a whole, currently estimated to be at least 1,133 m3 of natural gas. The Mamba North East 1 reserves, drilled in waters of 1,848 metres and with an overall depth of 4,560 metres, are part of the Mamba North 1 and Mamba South 1 “reservoir” complex.
ENI plans to begin drilling a new well (its fourth) in the Mambo complex, and another 3 wells, in 2012, to complete its exploration of the additional potential of the Mamba complex. Discoveries thus far confirm the global importance of the natural gas reserves offshore from the Rovuma basin, with confirmed reserves of around 2,000 billion cubic metres (including those found by the US company, Anadarko).
