United States – Sardinian textiles on show at the Italian Cultural Institute

MURATS, the Sardinian regional museum of textile art, has provided a selection of exhibits for a show being held at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco from Thursday, 19 January to Friday, 24 February. “Sardinian textile production is fairly unknown outside the region and this show is intended to promote Sardinian craftwork and relaunch its artists” says the ICI website. Organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco itself, together with Sardinian Arts, the show pays tribute to Sardinian textile art, allowing visitors to admire ancient artifacts and contemporary handicrafts from the town of Samugheo, together with a few precious items of manufacturing tradition supplied by MURATS. The inaugural evening will be attended by two artists: Isa Frongia and Anna Maria Piratsu, whose task will be to illustrate the pibiones process: a traditional grain weaving technique typical of Sardinia. In Sardinian, the word pibiones means grape berry and is the word used to describe the ringlets of yarn that protrude from the surface of the fabric to create a design.
