The Italian Government has been informed of the tragic fate presumably suffered by Italian student Giulio Regeni in Cairo. While awaiting official confirmation from the Egyptian authorities, Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni expressed his own and the Government’s grief to the student’s family who are presently in Cairo and have been given the unconfirmed news. His family, assisted by the Italian Ambassador, will soon also be joined by the Minister of Economic Development, Federica Guidi, who has decided to suspend her visit to the Egyptian capital.
The Italian Government has asked the Egyptian authorities to make their utmost effort to verify the truth and reconstruct the circumstances and also immediately open a joint investigation with the participation of Italian experts.
