The Foreign Ministry is giving utmost attention to the case of journalist Gabriele Del Grande

The Foreign Ministry and the Italian Embassy in Ankara have been following the case of journalist Gabriele Del Grande with the utmost attention from the very start and are in constant contact with his family. Gabriele Del Grande’s girlfriend and the family lawyer were also contacted today.

Minister Alfano instructed the Italian Consul in Izmir to go to Mugla – where Del Grande is detained – to visit the journalist while the Italian Ambassador in Ankara submitted the request of a consular visit to Turkish authorities, as laid down in the 1963 Vienna Convention. From the very beginning of the incident, the Italian Foreign Ministry has been pressing to assure that Gabriele Del Grande receive regular legal and consular assistance.

Also thanks to the awareness raising action promoted by Italy from the outset, Mr Del Grande was able to have a telephone conversation with his family. But this is evidently not sufficient and the Foreign Ministry is asking for Del Grande to be released, as provided for by law.
