“I have arranged for immediate help to be provided through Italian Cooperation to the Colombian Red Cross, which is on the front line providing relief to the victims of the devastating mudslide that swept through the city of Mocoa in the south-west of the country”, announced Minister Alfano. He added: “The Italian contribution of 300,000 euros will fund relief operations carried out by local volunteers and specialist teams delivered by helicopter from Bogotá. They will carry out search and rescue operations, supply water and medical care and give psychological support to survivors”.
Torrential rain in recent days caused three rivers to burst their banks in the south-western region of Putumayo, Colombia, and caused the very severe mudslide that overwhelmed the city of Mocoa.
The provisional toll is over 250 dead, plus 200 missing and around 400 injured.
