La Vice Ministra degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, Emanuela Del Re, ha svolto una visita in Tigray per recarsi al sito archeologico di Axum. La missione è stata molto apprezzata dal Primo Ministro etiopico, Abiy Ahmed Ali, che pochi giorni prima si era recato egli stesso ad Axum, e dalle Autorità del Tigray.

Gli obelischi di Axum hanno un altissimo valore storico archeologico e simbolico per l’Etiopia.  L’Italia ne riconosce la grande rilevanza e per questo la Vice Ministra si è impegnata a fornire il necessario sostegno tecnico per la tutela e conservazione del sito patrimonio dell’UNESCO.

La Vice Ministra Del Re ha preannunciato alle Autorità locali l’invio entro pochi giorni di un team di esperti dall’Italia per un’analisi delle necessarie misure da adottare per preservare l’integrità e la stabilità degli obelischi. Uno dei più grandi e pregevoli obelischi di Axum (il cd n. 2) fu portato in Italia durante il regime fascista e nel 2005 restituito alle autorità etiopiche e ricollocato nel sito originario.  Axum è meta di decine di migliaia di turisti da tutto il mondo.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, travelled to Tigray to visit the archaeological site of Axum. Her visit was greatly appreciated by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, who visited Axum only a few days earlier, as well as by the Authorities of the Tigray Region.

The Axum obelisks are of great historical, archaeological and symbolic value for Ethiopia. Italy recognises their great importance and this is the reason why Deputy Foreign Minister Del Re committed to provide the technical support for the protection and conservation of the UNESCO world heritage site.

Deputy Foreign Minister Del Re announced to local Authorities the arrival of a team of experts from Italy in a few days to make an analysis of the necessary measures to adopt in order to assure the integrity and stability of the obelisks. One of the largest and most prized Axum obelisks (the so-called N. 2) was brought to Italy during the Fascist regime and returned to the Ethiopian Authorities in 2015 and placed back in its original site. Axum is the destination of tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world.
