Sereni attends the USAID-sponsored summit on Ethiopia

Today, Vice Minister Sereni participated in an informal ministerial-level summit on the conflict in Ethiopia and the humanitarian crisis in the country, organised by USAID and chaired by Director General Samantha Power, as part of a series of international coordination initiatives the US Administration on the ongoing crisis.

“It is now necessary to make greater efforts to promote dialogue between the central government and all parties, achieve a ceasefire urgently, and increase humanitarian aid activities in the Tigray region and all areas affected by different emergencies,” stated the Vice Minister during the meeting.

Italy’s priorities in the current crisis, within the framework of a broader European position, were also reiterated: immediate and unconditional humanitarian access to the region; complete respect for international humanitarian law; immediate cessation of hostilities by all actors involved; and the continuation of ongoing investigations to bring to justice those responsible for the atrocities and massacres.

“In this context”, the Vice Minister added, “Italy is particularly committed to ensuring health support for the civilian populations who have been suffering the dramatic consequences of this conflict for almost a year. The international community must work jointly to cease the fighting and prevent further deterioration of conditions on the ground”.
