History and fonds

PLEASE NOTE: in view of facilitating the use of the services provided by the Archives, prior consultation of the Minimum Glossary of Archival Terminology is highly recommended.

Mission

The Historical Diplomatic Archives deal with the conservation, reorganisation and inventory of historical diplomatic documentation produced by the Ministry’s Central Offices and its Diplomatic and Consular Missions abroad.
The Archives also manage the public accessibility of these documents, within the limits of the possibility of consulting them.

Documentation stored

The Historical Diplomatic Archives currently hold approximately 30 linear kilometres of documents, arranged and stored according to their institutional origin (i.e. the transferring office) and preserving the original organisation.

Fonds
The fonds available for consultation are equipped with descriptive tools (published inventories, typewritten inventories, transfer records, etc.) to facilitate research. These tools can be consulted in paper format in the Reading Room and, in many cases, they are also available online.

Inventories
Two lists of inventories are available:
– digital inventories (which can be consulted online below)
– inventories in paper format (which can be consulted only in the Reading Room – list below)

Diplomatic documents online
Before starting an archival search, please consult the published series of Italian Diplomatic Documents.
