The Secretary General of the Farnesina, Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni, accompanied by the President of the Jewish Community of Rome, Ruth Dureghello, by the President of the Union of Jewish Communities in Italy, Noemi Di Segni and by the Holocaust survivor, Sami Modiano, today visited the exhibition “Only duty. Beyond duty. Italian diplomacy in the face of the persecution of the Jews. 1938-1943.”
“I wanted our young colleagues who have recently joined the diplomatic service, to join me here today. Although we cannot erase the past, we have a moral duty to remember it and also to ensure future generations do so,” commented the Secretary General. “In this regard,” continued Ambassador Belloni, “It is important to preserve the memory of those colleagues who were able to go “beyond their normal duty” and, inspired by higher ideals, opposed the racial laws thereby saving the lives of hundreds of Jews. I would like these examples of courage to always inspire our work as servants of the State, remembering that every day each one of us, through their contribution in carrying out their work, can and must make a difference.”
