Uganda: a meal for 2,500 refugees to celebrate the ‘Week of Italian Cuisine’

The ‘Week of Italian Cuisine in the World’ does not only showcase the excellence of our Country’s agri-food products but is also an opportunity to help those in need. Therefore, as part of the initiatives scheduled for the Week, the Italian Embassy in Uganda organised a Day in favour of the refugees hosted in the Rhino Camp, in the Arua District, in the north of the Country. Thanks to the contribution by Roman Chef Fabio Bongianni and ACAV, the Trento-based NGO, more 2,500 people, half of whom were children, enjoyed a truly Italian meal. Bongianni also delivered a master cooking class to 15 refugee girls attending the Catering Courses organised by ACAV. The course is based on Italian recipes that can be made with local ingredients (fresh pasta, ‘pasta e fagioli’, polenta and stewed meat, struffoli honey balls). ‘Professional Kits’ were instead distributed to the young refugee girls attending ACAV’s beautician and dressmaker courses. Lastly, an elementary school set up by ACAV was open thanks to the financing of the Trento-based San Zeno Foundation.
