The Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, met Foreign Affairs Federal Counsellor of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter in Neuchatel on Monday.
The meeting confirmed excellent bilateral relations and positive economic and commercial potentials. Both ministers reiterated their common intention to enhance collaboration on issues about the border dividing the two countries and cooperation on strategic sectors such as energy and transport, in view of the opening of the San Gottardo gallery due on June 1st. The ministers have taken note of consultations on enhancing collaboration between the police forces in the fight against cross-border crime.
Gentiloni and Burkhalter discussed free circulation of people after the alteration of the Swiss constitution following a referendum on Feb. 9, 2014, on mass migration. Minister Gentiloni said he hopes that negotiations with the EU will soon resume to promote solutions that take into account the Swiss concerns and focus on options compatible with the principle of free circulation. Italy confirmed it was willing to contribute to this cause.
The two ministers exchanged views on the management of migration flow emergencies and international issues, with special concern for the crises in Syria, Iraq and Libya.
