The Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni received today at the Farnesina Iran’s Secretary of the High Council for Human Rights, Mohammad Javad Larijani. The Iranian top official was in Rome to attend the third edition of the Italy- Iran Seminar on the “Protection of  human rights in criminal justice systems,” organised by the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation  – MAECI. 

During the meeting, Minister Gentiloni reaffirmed that Italy is against the death penalty and recalled the international campaign which has been going on for years now asking for a moratorium. Minister Gentiloni said he hoped the Iranian system would evolve along this line, also in compliance with what was envisaged by the international conventions Iran ratified. 

Minister Gentiloni confirmed that Italy continues to support Iran in its commitment to fully implement the nuclear deal it agreed to, highlighting the positive dynamics it could set in motion at the regional and global level.

Moreover, Minister Gentiloni underlined that the Italian government is determined to strengthen Italy’s role as a privileged economic and trade partner of Tehran, hoping that Iran will press ahead with the reforms it has started.

Il Ministro degli Affari Esteri Paolo Gentiloni ha ricevuto oggi alla Farnesina il Segretario del Consiglio dei Diritti Umani del Potere Giudiziario dell’Iran Mohammad Javad Larijani, a Roma per la terza edizione del seminario italo-iraniano sulla “Protezione dei diritti umani nei sistemi di giustizia penale”, organizzato dall’Istituto Superiore Internazionale di Scienze Criminali (ISISC) in collaborazione con il MAECI.  

Nel corso dell’incontro il Ministro Gentiloni ha ribadito la contrarietà dell’Italia al ricorso alla pena di morte, richiamando la campagna internazionale da anni condotta con la richiesta di una moratoria e auspicando un’evoluzione in tal senso del sistema iraniano, in base anche a quanto previsto dalle convenzioni internazionali ratificate dall’Iran.

Il Ministro Gentiloni ha confermato il sostegno all’impegno iraniano a dare piena attuazione all’accordo sul nucleare, sottolineando le dinamiche positive che esso può innescare in ambito regionale e globale.

Gentiloni ha altresì ribadito la determinazione del Governo italiano a rafforzare il ruolo di partner economico e commerciale privilegiato di Teheran, auspicando che il Governo iraniano proceda lungo il cammino delle riforme avviato.
