With regard to the Libyan crisis, Italy and Tunisia share a common position on “the need to redouble efforts to find a solution that all the factions can agree to, since political stability is the only way to resolving the crisis”, said Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the end of a meeting with Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi in Tunis. During the meeting they also underscored “the very important ties between our two countries”, and Minister Gentiloni reconfirmed Italy’s support for the Tunisia’s democratic and constitutional undertakings.
Italy supports UN envoy
Gentiloni, who also met with his Tunisian colleague Taieb Baccouche, who pledged his country’s “willingness to collaborate with Algeria and the countries of the region” in confronting the Libyan crisis, renewed Italy’s pledge to “offer every support” to the diplomatic efforts of UN envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon. The minister spoke of Italy’s diplomatic initiative as having a two-fold purpose: to put the Libyan question at the top of the international agenda, and to continue to work with all Western countries and those near to Libya, in support of the UN’s efforts at a political-diplomatic solution that leads, first and foremost, to an inclusive government of national reconciliation.
