Iran: Nuclear programme – New round of talks preceded by Minister Gentiloni’s two days of discussions in Tehran

In the wake of Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s two days in Tehran, a new round of talks to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme has begun in Geneva. In Vienna, in the meantime, the issues to be discussed by the governors of the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the next 5 days also include Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Italy hopes for agreement

As Minister Gentiloni told the Iranian authorities, Italy hopes to see an agreement that reassures the international community over the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme. He called on the Iranians to “make every effort to consider the most flexible approach possible”. An approach that also takes the remaining difficulties into account, such as the timescale and conditions for withdrawing sanctions.

Stability for the region

“Reaching agreement is in the interest of all”, as Gentiloni underscored. “It is in the interest of peace, of the international community, of regional stability – in which Iran can play a decisive role – of combating terrorism and the common enemy that calls itself ISIS. And looking ahead, an agreement could give a considerable new impetus to economic relations between Italy and Iran”.
