Today Palazzo della Farnesina hosts a meeting between the Italian and Iranian Foreign Ministers, Paolo Gentiloni and Mohammad Javad Zarif, as part of the historic visit by President Hassan Rouhani to Rome, the initial stop on his first trip in Europe.
This contact between Rome and Teheran is even more meaningful because it is scheduled after the Implementation Day, on January 16, which marked the coming into force of the agreement on the nuclear programme and the consequent removal of most of the sanctions.
The Italian foreign policy supports a diplomatic solution to the nuclear dossier and considers essential the involvement of Teheran in the search for solutions to the regional crises, with the aim of fostering its constructive role in the fight against global terrorism and the solution to the current crises, spanning from Syria to Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
Mr Rouhani’s mission is a key phase in the strategy of our Country System to launch a timely recovery of the market shares lost due to the sanctioning system, by relying on Iran’s favourable perception of the role played by Italy in the region and within the International Community.
