“The results of the first round of talks in Geneva brings new hope for a solution to Libya’s political, security, institutional and economic crisis. We have the unceasing efforts of UN Secretary General’s Special Representative Bernardino Leon to thank for this significant development, to whom Italy has extended every possible support”, said Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni. “I am aware of the difficulties, but with equal hope am looking to the resumption of the Geneva talks next week. It is my hope that all the parties invited will confirm their participation, thereby demonstrating the same open constructive attitude toward dialogue that marked the early days of discussions on a political solution to the ongoing crisis, first and foremost through the formation of a national unity government”, the minister asserted. “There is no military solution to the crisis and that is why I am encouraged by the announcement of a ceasefire, which I hope will be implemented in the coming hours”, added Gentiloni. “This morning’s car-bomb at the Algerian embassy in Tripoli highlights the urgency for the joint effort of the supporters of a dialogue aimed at thwarting terrorism and all other attempts to sabotage resolution of the crisis”, the minister stated. He added that, “in a context such as this, all the components of Libyan society are called upon to work with the maximum commitment and determination to overcoming their differences. Those who do not seize this important opportunity are doomed to isolation”. Finally, Gentiloni reiterated that “Italy will not fail to extend its support to those Libyan actors that contribute in earnest to the formation of a national unity government and to the cessation of all hostilities”.
