UN Security Council Resolution on Libya – Gentiloni: a decisive step towards stabilisation. Satisfaction over Italy’s role

“The UN Security Council Resolution on Libya is an important step towards the stabilisation of the country. It’s a decision to which Italy decisively contributed, with the work of the recent months, which culminated in the Rome summit of 13 December. The joint communiqué adopted in Rome is the basis of the Resolution adopted this evening in New York”, Foreign Minister Gentiloni commented. “The Security Council supports the Government of National Accord established by the political agreement signed in Skhirat and recognises it in the name of the entire international community”, continued Gentiloni.

“The Resolution calls upon all Member states to respond positively to requests for assistance from the legitimate Libyan government in the forthcoming months. The United Nations have established the legal framework within which the international support for the stabilisation of Libya can take shape. The new government which, according to the Skhirat agreements, shall be approved by the presidential council in January [2016], will set out the most urgent economic, humanitarian and security needs in the interests of the Libyan people. On this basis, Italy and the other countries that signed the Rome declaration will do their part”, the Minister said.

“I am aware of how long and difficult the road to peace, development and stability in Libya remains. I know that the consensus achieved with the Skhirat agreement needs to be broadened and that no triumphalism is justified. But today I can only express Italy’s great satisfaction over the results achieved by our diplomatic effort and that of all the major countries involved”, concluded Minister Gentiloni.
