Minister Gentiloni: Telephone conversations with Libyan Prime Minister Designate and UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni this morning reiterated to Libyan Prime Minister Designate Fayez Al-Sarraj Italy’s full support for the Presidency Council for Libya’s actions. During the telephone conversation Minister Gentiloni also expressed his solidarity for the incident that involved Mr. Al-Sarraj on Friday. The Prime Minister Designate downplayed the importance of the incident that struck him after his visit to Zliten, which was hit by a tragic bomb attack two days earlier. Insufficient security on the road from Zliten to Misrata Airport induced the presidential convoy to make a change in plans, thus delaying it. Once security conditions were restored, the presidential convoy was able to reach the airport.  The incident confirms the vulnerability of Libya’s security conditions although it did not involve an assault or a terrorist attack on the Prime Minister-designate.

During his talks with Mr. Al Sarraj and then with UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Martin Kobler, Mr Gentiloni reiterated Italy’s full support to the commitments made in December’s Rome-hosted Ministerial Conference and to the implementation of the Skhirat  agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2259. “It is necessary to put in place a Government of National Accord soon and focus on the common fight against terrorism, reconstruction and pacification of the country,” said Minister Gentiloni.

“I am happy for the commitment and determination Prime Minister Al Sarraj and Martin Kobler again expressed this morning,” the Minister concluded.
